Government Moves to Abolish Section 21 Evictions with Renters' Rights Bill
The Government has taken a significant step toward abolishing Section 21 'no fault' evictions with the introduction of the Renters' Rights Bill, which had its first reading in Parliament.
Published on Wednesday, this bill aims to prohibit Section 21 evictions, signalling the Government's commitment to swiftly advance regulations within the Private Rented Sector.
The previous Conservative administration was unable to fulfil its promise to eliminate Section 21, as it ran out of time due to a snap election. However, the newly elected Labour government is poised to follow through on this initiative.
Propertymark has expressed its dissatisfaction with this development, particularly highlighting the lack of a commitment to address existing backlogs in the court system.
Timothy Douglas, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Propertymark, stated, “While Propertymark recognizes the push for enhanced standards, it is crucial for the UK Government to fully comprehend the implications of these changes. Agents across the country are left uncertain about how this legislation will address the pressing demand for rental housing.”
He added, “There must be a commitment to ensure that the court system and grounds for possession are robust and fit for purpose.”
