A landlord has been penalized with a fine of £10,000 for failing to present an Electrical Safety Installation Certificate when requested by Hastings Borough Council.
Providing this certificate is a legal obligation, and the landlord's failure to comply prompted the Council to initiate court proceedings.
The landlord subsequently appealed to the First Tier Tribunal (Property Chamber), but the appeal was dismissed due to non-compliance with the tribunal's directives, resulting in the £10,000 fine.
Councillor Glenn Haffenden, the lead councillor for housing and community wellbeing, stated: “Conducting regular and timely inspections of electrical systems in properties is a crucial safeguard for tenants, as faults and issues may not always be immediately apparent.
“The repercussions of undetected faulty installations can not only expose tenants to the risk of electrical shocks but can also lead to other dangers, such as fires.
“As a council, we are committed to supporting our landlords, who play a vital role in the private rented sector within the town. Our team of officers will work with landlords as needed to ensure compliance."
"We will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action when necessary.”
